Role of ACGME Accreditation
The ACGME accreditation council aims to develop and nurture a team-based learning environment and culture where the residents and everybody learns and mentors in providing quality patient care.
Several committees in the accreditation council help in the accurate and perfect working of the accreditation system.
There are specialty-specific committees of volunteer physicians, including a resident representative. There is also a non-physician public member in the program committee. It is done to create a perfect balance and high work standards in each accredited committee to assure that the physician gets the best quality of medical education.
The ACGME council monitors the Accredited residency programs and fellowship programs through various data collection, surveys, and frequent site visits.
The Review Committee regularly reviews the accreditation norms and ACGME requirements to make sure that they are moving according to the current times and following the best practice in medicine.
The residents help the ACGME council by giving honest reviews and feedback on the accredited fellowship programs. This feedback is necessary as they help improve the overall quality of accredited programs.
The ACGME accreditation means the sponsoring institution that is providing the medical education programs and fellowships meets the standards of giving quality education. The ACGME accreditation guarantees that the institution’s teaching in medical specialty programs is of the best quality and based on norms set by the American Board.
Some of the ACGME-accredited programs are Internal Medicine, Anesthesiology, Cardiothoracic Surgery, Dermatology, Colon and Rectal Surgery, Child Neurology, and Emergency Medicine.
THE ACGME accreditation is based on published accreditation standards and norms. To become ACGME accredited, the new residency program has to go through a peer-review process.
ACGME probationary accreditation means that it is an individual category of the accreditation process. It is decided when the review committee of the ACGME declares that the sponsoring institution has failed to maintain the program requirements set by the ACGME council.
